Start a Band...the Guitar Hero Way

Guitar Hero World Tour transforms music gaming by expanding Guitar Hero's signature guitar gameplay into a cooperative band experience that combines advanced wireless instruments with online and offline gameplay modes including online Band Career and 8-player "Battle of the Bands," which allows two full bands to compete head-to-head online. The game features a slick redesigned guitar, an authentic electronic drum kit, and a microphone, as well as a Music Studio music creator that lets players compose, record, edit and share their own rock ‘n’ roll anthems.

Wireless Instruments

New to GHWT is a redesigned, more responsive guitar controller, which features a touch-sensitive slide bar on the neck that allows the player to play through certain song passages without needing to strum. Check out the drum kit featuring three drum pads, two raised cymbals, and a bass kick pedal. The drum controller combines larger and quieter, velocity-sensitive drum heads with soft rubber construction to deliver authentic bounce back and is easy to set up, move, break down and store.

Be the Next Great Songwriter

Music Studio lets players express their musical creativity by giving them access to a full complement of tools to create digital music from scratch utilizing the guitar controller and drum kit. Players can create their tracks and then play them in-game or share the recordings with the entire Guitar Hero community through GHTunes. GHTunes allows other gamers from around the world to download and play the community's original tracks. Available to PlayStation 3 gamers is Line 6's guitar tone technology, enabling them to use amps, cabs, and effects from the Line 6 POD.

Create the Band

Budding rock stars can live out their rock ‘n’ roll fantasies by playing either a single instrument or any combination of instruments, in addition to the full band experience. When rocking as part of a band, up to four players can jam together in quickplay or as they progress through a career. Both band and single-player careers feature non-linear progression giving artists the option to change difficulty and instruments with a variety of different gigs available at any time.

Never Jam Solo Again

Virtual musicians in need of band mates can take their careers online forming worldwide ensembles so no rock star ever has to play a gig solo. Plus, GHWT adds a "Battle of the Bands" modes, which allows eight players to join online and challenge each other band-to-band to establish global supremacy.

Customize Everything

The character creator allows gamers to create a rock star with style as unique as their own. Absolute customization from the clothes, to the facial and body structure, to the tattoos and accessories, players are encouraged to unleash their inner rock legend. The Rock Star Creator doesn't just allow players to build the ultimate rock god; the in-depth creators include the ability to customize guitars, drums and microphones. Adding yet another layer of personalization, gamers can create custom logos for their instruments, band, or album covers.

A Set List for the Ages

The Guitar Hero World Tour set list is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest artists of all-time including Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, and Sublime. There are over 85 tracks, plus frequent downloadable singles and track packs. In addition to the killer track list, the game will feature rock icons such as Hayley Williams of Paramore and Travis Barker of +44 and blink-182.

5 out of 5 stars Great game !! and Did I mention lots of fun?   October 27, 2008

So we were out yesterday and we found a local store that was open late and they were selling GHWT on the day of release and we thought we could pick it up, so we did and then when we got home we started thinking wether to open the box or not?!

First this is maybe our 4th or 5th rythem/music game. we have GH3 RB1, and some other karoke games. Our greatest concern was that we dont need anymore instruments than we already have (3 plastic guitars, 5 mics and 1 wired drum set)
RB2 or GH-WT? it really depends how much your willing to spend because you can always get both!! but I think if you already have RB1 just pick up the RB2 standalone game the instruments though much improved dont warrent the investment from my point of view. GH-WT instruments on the other hand especially the drum kit have something relatively new to offer.
So the big question for us was do we open it or not? should we get RB2 instead? we decided to go ahead and open the box!! and we are glad we did, very positive experience so far.

The actual hands- on review broken down to diffirent sections:
1. standalone game: GH-WT is a great addition to the GH series with a lot of really great tracks, graphics are cleaner but cartonish as usual( which has some kind of special appeal to it). There is also the compostion mode which allows you to creat your own playble tracks, I looked into briefly and I would say it has a lot of potentialin it. There is also the added bonus of publishing your tracks online which may help uleash your inner composer.

I still havn't tried online play so maybe I'll update this section later.
Overall the game alone is really worth getting but the important part is wether to get the band kit or not?
2. Instruments:
A. The Guitar has a nice feel to it, it has been redesigned with removable face plates which can make it really customizable. they also added a slide bar which could be helpful for nailing some of the difficult solos.

B. Drum set: You get a wireless drum set that feels and looks really well made, its heavier than RB1 set(which makes it feel even more solid) but not too heavy though, and it Looks better than the new RB2 drum set. The presence of cymbals also adds a nice touch of authenticty and enhanced game play. I tried it with RB1 and until now its not compatible with it( treated like a regular controler not as a drum set)

c. Microphone: its your standerd wired rythem game mic nothing fancy here.

RB Vs GH instruments compatibility:
I only tried the GH kit on RB and doenst work, ill be cross testing soon and updating this review.

So overall its highly recommended if your into rythem games and if your not then maybe its time to get started! its really great for when you have friends or relatives over or maybe a family activety with your kids.
what are you waiting for? add to cart :)

Update: I faced some issues with the performance of the drum kit so I contacted activision and they sent me a cable to adjust sensitivety, now its working great no issues, so beafore you take it back give it a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Lengends of Rock Pumped up to an new level!   October 27, 2008

I purchased this bandkit as soon as I could this morning the day of release, and it is well worth it. Here is what comes it the kit: Drum kit(3 pads, 2 cymbal risers, kick pedal) with midi in and expansion port, drumsticks, usb microphone, guitar with connector/usb splitter, stickers for guitar. All you need to connect in one box, no need for extra usb hub if you do not want it.

A bit about the drum kit, very playable, durable upper, kick pedal is a bit flimsy, but alright for my purposes.

A bit about the new guitar. This features detachable/interchangable faceplate, extended neck, larger strumbar, longer wammy bar, and the tap/touch pad. this guitar is not necessary for any features in the game, but for advanced gamers, they may find it a new fun way to bend the sounds on long notes, or get through hammerons and pull offs faster. I'm pleased I can get through this on the old Les Paul.

Now, about the game itself, see songlisting above, it's amazing. Just a ton more songs available in the game, only a few to "purchase" in the game, the rest unlock. The venues and graphics are all sharp and fantastic to look at. The animation of the Guests who come in are spot on, such as Ted Nugent riding in on a Bison, or Zach Wilde's attude behind the 6 string. There are many other guest such as Billy Corgan from smashing pumkins, the Lead Singer of Paramore, and the drummer from Blink 182. The "guitar battles" have been replaced by guitar challenges by legends like Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent who want you to show off, and "not embarass them" on stage, so play your best. None of the "amp overloads" or broken strings. Battles still available multiplayer or online mode. Overall the game play will keep you busy for many hours (took me almost 4 hours to get 50% through, minimal breaks). Also, there is a recording studio that allow users to make and play their own music, a first for this genre (though Rock Revolution tried). And much like legends of rock, there is online team play, head to head battling.

If you do not have another "Band Kit" and are looking to have one, this is an excellent choice, and having played Rock band and Rock Band Two, this is at or above both of those, especially since they are all "Master Recordings", no covers, and it has plenty of great songs fulfill my need to thrash, rock, or pop my way about stage.

Final note: This is a good enough game for even those who can not pony up the dough for full kit or a new guitar, just get the game and play just bass and guitar, and let your inner rock fury go!

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it has its problems, but it's GREAT!!!   October 30, 2008

Comparing this game EA's Rock Band, I think you will notice that Word Tour plays a little more to music enthusiasts rather than the party crowd Rock Band might appeal to. Out of the box you will find World Tour's music offers complex drum rhythms and some serious guitar shredding. I would say that much of World Tour set list really brings out the feeling of "Rock and Roll" much more than the majority Rock Band's music selection does. Thats not to say your favorite radio friendly song isn't or won't be offered, but World Tours songs are not as party friendly a lot Rock Band's tracks are. (Note: This can all be changed when you bring downloadable content into the mix, but this review does not include the DLC)

It you have done any research at all you will find out that the drums have been a major problem from the get go. Thankfully Activision released a "drum tuner," (Only for PC and requires a MIDI to USB cable) which addresses this issue. Admittedly this should be something included with all of these music/rhythm games - but this fixes that issue, so you should not have to worry about faulty hardware that the other reviewers talk about.

World Tour also has a music creation mode, its good, if you don't mind slightly lower sound quality. Essentially you can have an infinite playlist if you are good at composing music for a rock band. It's a worthy note.

Both are great games and eventually all of the peripherals will be cross compatible, so get both if you can. If not, go with World Tour if you really want to feel like a band or do Rock Band if you are wanting to throw parties where anyone can find their favorite song while they are drunk - which isn't a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars GHWT is crazy fun, but has some issues !!   December 16, 2008

Overall, GHWT is mad fun. I had friends over the other night and we jammed in Band mode until the wee hours of the morning (and they aren't rock fans at all).

There are many reviews of GHWT on the net. This is just my 2 cents. I have heard from various Rock Band fans that GHWT blows due to the drumming experience, the Star Power (Overdrive) activation process, and the cartoony graphics. I have played RB games less than GHWT, but I can make comments on both. For this review, I will focus on the drumming experience instead of the guitar and singing experience (since the general consensus is that the guitar experience is awesome).

Other than drum sensitivity issues, I see why those who play RB drums prefer its gameplay over GHWT. RB is a bit simpler than GHWT being that RB plays 4 drum pads + 1 pedal while GHWT plays 5 pads + 1 pedal (3 pads, 2 simulated cymbals-triangle thingies). Simply put, RB is easier to play than GHWT. If you've gotten used to playing 4 pads, then throwing in another (5th) pad will complicate things. I prefer GHWT's drumming experience simply because it provides a more realistic drumming experience (for a game that is). I am by no means a great drummer, but I can play the drums a little bit (even read drum music) and I find that the combination of 3 pads and 2 simulated cymbals is very close to a real drum set or e-drum kit having a snare drum, 2 toms, and 2 cymbals (crash and ride). I like the fact that in the GHWT game, the red pad is usually dedicated to the snare drum sound, the blue and green pads are usually dedicated to the tom sounds, the yellow pad is usually dedicated to the hi-hat/crash sounds, and the orange pad has the ride cymbal sound. In RB games, the blue and/or green may be alternated between tom and cymbal sounds.

If you are not a drummer or have no prior drumming knowledge, RB will be more enjoyable for you in regards to drumming. If you have drumming knowledge, GHWT will be more enjoyable for you since the pad placements and pad assignments more closely resemble a real drum set. I find that the best part about the game is that drum tracks in the hard and expert levels play very much like the real drum tracks in the actual song.

If you are a real drummer or have an interest in being a real drummer, I find that playing GHWT is just a better drumming game. I recently bought the ION Drum Rocker upgrade (www.drumrocker.com or PlayStation 3 Drum Rocker Premium Drum Set)for the PS3 and also have ordered the OSP-Roadie Upgrade Kit w/ Double Bass Kicker (to make the ION a stand alone e-drum kit (www.siglermusiconline.com/store/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=98) or (OSP Pro Upgrade Kit for ION Drum Rocker Drum Set).

There are tons of reviews on the ION drum kit, so I won't go into that. However, I find that playing the ION kit is not as enjoyable on GHWT because the game recognizes the kit as different non-GHWT drum set and cancels the orange cymbal pad/track and makes the game play with 4 pads instead of 5. This makes the game/drum more like RB and takes away from the more realistic drumming experience. I pray to God almighty for "The Powers That Be" to please create a patch to fix this. I love the ION Drum Rocker but I hate the way GHWT plays now when using it. But, it definately works better for RB2 than the original drum set.

Despite, the more realistic drumming, its still a fun game for the non-drummer. I can't keep my friends and family off of the game when they come over.

With that said, here are other pros and cons for GHWT.

PROS
-The build quality of the drum set is pretty good. It's solid as a rock. It will definately last longer than the RB drums.

-I like the graphics and cartoony look of the game. Others do not. I suppose they have gotten used to the look of RB.

-I like the song list. There are a variety of different types of rock songs in the game. LaBamba (by Los Lobos) is kind of difficult in Medium level. I can't wait to master this one in Hard and Expert. I think I even saw a gospel/christian rock song in the track list (Good God by Anouk). Its a nice one on drums. With 80 songs (which I have already unlocked with a cheat code), you are bound to find something you like. I have also been exposed to a lot of good songs that I have never heard before.

-Practice Mode. I love that you can slow down the track, and/or focus on certain sections, in order to master the song. That's how I was able to nail LaBamba.

-I actually like the way Star Power (Overdrive is activated). You have to hit the Yellow and Orange cymbal at the same time once you've built up your Starpower Meter. The average non-drummer will find this annoying because it is hard to do that and keep the beat going. I like this method because it gives you the choice as to WHEN you want to kick in the Starpower (as opposed to RB in which you have certain points to complete a combo). By activating Starpwer in this way, you can build up your Starpower meter to the Max and then activate it before the sections of the song that have a larger amount of notes/hits. If you do this, and maintain a streak, you will get more points that way (if you care about scores). The downside of course is that you have to activate it in a way in which it won't disrupt your rythm. I find that its best to activate SP when you alread have an orange note/hit on the drum chart. If you do it then, you will keep the rythym up because you already have to hit the orange anyway. Also, if you activate SP, you don't have to hit any other notes during the activation (just yellow and orange). For instance (in Medium, Hard, Expert Levels), alot of times an orange/ride cymbal hit will be paired at the same time with the purple line/bass kick pedal hit. You don't have to hit the pedal if you activate SP with the Y and O pads at the same time and you won't lose your combo streak. Other times to active SP is during a purple line/bass hit or when there is a little bit of space for the next hit.

CONS
-The drum set is solid, but as you know the pads have sensitivity issues. Sometimes, I hit a yellow and the red will fire also. Othertimes, the yellow and orange cymbals don't fire at all. This will break your combo alot. Hopefully, the pad sensitivity adjustment program and the Midi/USB cable (which is being sent from Red Octane) will take care of this issue. I score pretty well and will get between 90-97% of a song even though there are sensitivity issues.

-What bothers me the most about this game is that when I am in Quickplay mode, I can't replay the song instantly after I have "Rocked" and subsequently recieved my score. You have to go back out to the menu and select the song again. That annoys the crap out of me because it takes too long to load songs. You can replay in practice mode, so why can't you replay in quickplay mode.

-I absolutely hate that when the ION Drum Rocker is plugged in, it will not let me play with the 5 notes (orange note/ride cymbal is deleted).
