5 out of 5 stars Definitely Great!!   June 16, 2009

I am one of the people that grew up watching the two Ghostbuster movies and every incarnation TV series. If you are a fan of the movies, you will love the game. The story is full jokes and is just as funny as the two movies. There were many times that made me laugh out loud. While playing, it felt as if I was actually in the movie because the game has such great game/gamer interaction.

I have to admit that there are a couple of flaws with the game, mainly the running, which isn't the greatest. Besides that, there is really nothing that I didn't like. I had forgotten how much I loved the two movies and this really brought back the nostalgia, and I actually had tears in my eyes at times. The series just holds a lot of great memories for old-time fans such as myself. If you are a fan, you will want this game. It's great!

Anyone who is a true video game junky knows that there is one written-in-stone, undeniable rule when it comes to video games that are based on movies.

They suck. Not only do they suck...they suck like a transvestite prostitute at a Hell's Angels rally. They suck like a court-appointed attorney. They suck worse than St. Louis style pizza. They suck worse than an animal shelter owned by Michael Vick. They suck worse than Chicago.

Well...okay, it's hard to suck as bad as Chicago. At least no video game based off a movie was ever home to the worst politicians EVER.

This game shatters that rule. It not only shatters it...it obliterates it.

The gameplay is actually innovative and fun. I had a bit of trouble at first figuring things out (the game didn't tell me how to deploy a trap...or at least I didn't see or hear it) but it has a little guide book to help you if you go into your menu. There's research to be done (although it's hard to get a scan of a creature on the PKE meter when it's throwing a bus at your head). It's neat to zap ghosts and feel like a real Ghostbuster like when I was a kid. I grew up watching the Ghostbusters and remember how excited I was when they released Ghostbusters 2.

Which brings me to what makes this game shine brighter than any star in the sky...the story and voice acting.

You have the ORIGINAL Ghostbusters voicing their characters from the movie. Bill Murray is fantastic (of course), Dan Akroid is absolutely hilarious as usual, Harold Ramis absolutely rocks the character of Egon with his usual intellectual wit, and Ernie Hudson returns with the straight-faced "I didn't see no ghost" one-liners. Every. Single. Scene. Had my girlfriend and I laughing out loud.

That's the important thing about this game...it feels like it wasn't made to sell to as many people as possible, it was made for the fans of the original Ghostbusters as a way for Murray, Akroid, Ramis, and Hudson to say "Thanks, everyone".

I honestly view this game as a gift for my years of watching, quoting, and stopping on a channel that happens to be showing the Ghostbusters movies to grin because I know the funny part is coming up next.

"GET HER!"

That was great, Ray. "Get her". Real scientific.

"I just panicked..."

"Ray...if someone asks you if you're a god...you say YES!"

"THE FLOWERS...ARE STILL...STANDING!"

"Must have been some cockroach..."

"It'll bite your head off, man."

If you don't know the movies...and quite possibly if you didn't GROW UP with the movies and cartoons then you probably won't "get" this game. You'll play it and maybe rate it as average or slightly above average.

If you, however, ate, slept, and breathed everything Ghostbuster and can answer the question "Who you gonna call!?" in less than a second and with GUSTO then this game will have you looking around with a feeling of creepyness one second and then crying with laughter the next and then RIGHT back to jumping out of your skin and madly flailing around with your proton beam.

Back to the game as I'm getting off on a nostalgic rant. There are bonus items in the form of "Cursed Artifacts" to collect. There are ghosts to read about by scanning them and entering them into your Tobin's Spirit Guide. There are also "power ups" to buy to improve your equipment and a running total of damage caused to all of the locations you visit.

If you, your children, spouse, best friend, or your pet are a fan of the Ghostbusters then you owe it to yourself to get this game. I have a half played copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sitting in the video game drawer that is seeing little playtime because I am now taking a trip down memory lane with the guys with nuclear accelerators on their backs.

So I'll say it loud and say it proud as I aim for the flat-top!

"Bustin' makes me feel GOOD!"

Pros:

+Well written dialog and exchanges between the characters
+Top-notch production values
+A lot of variety in the gameplay and overall a lot of fun
+Lots of detail given to the environments
+Good voice acting
+The multiplayer we get is a lot of fun!

Cons:

-No multiplayer for the main campaign
-Some may not like the whole, "Silent protagonist" thing... this is all about the original four Ghostbusters

Almost everyone knows Ghostbusters. The film was a hit in theaters and it had a couple of animated television shows that were pretty good as well. The film in and of itself is one of my personal favorite of all time (not to mention one of the funniest). In the video game realm, video games based off movies are usually not that great. Most of them usually come off as rushed and unpolished. This isn't true of Ghostbusters. In fact, as you play the care and devotion to the game can be seen. If you were a fan of the movies in particular, this game is like a trip down memory lane.

To begin, the production values of this game are stellar. The environments look exquisite, and the cutscenes look great. The music from the film is thrown in (including the signature song) for good measure and used really well. Also, the writers of the movies hopped on board as well as the cast to provide the voices for Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston. That being said, there's a good dose of humor here, particularly from Peter. In all the years since the second Ghostbusters movie, it's nice to know that the actors are still able to get back into character and that its brand of humor is still there.

The presentation in and of itself is absolutely stunning. You'll be in the Ghostbusters lair in between missions and you can interact with a lot of stuff like the arcade machine, slide down the poll, listen to messages on the phone and mess around with the jumping toaster. All this is well catered to fans and it looks absolutely marvelous.

Yet its the missions themselves that make you feel like a Ghostbuster. You're an unnamed silent protagonist who is there mainly for the sake of testing out Egon's new gear. You'll be happy to be strapped into the jumpsuit and given your own proton pack (and what self-respecting Ghostbusters fan wouldn't want the proton pack?). Even better, however, is when you can start going off and blasting ghost. You may think the whole thing might be repetitive, but it's really not. There are a good variety of ghosts around, and many of the environments are destructible in and of themselves. When you shoot at a wall, the embers and marks remain for the duration of the mission. You could write your name in the floor if you wish. Most of the ghosts you meet can easily be blasted to bits, while others will need to be trapped in the ghost trap. It's a lot of fun and will keep you immersed. As you go on missions, you'll also be accompanied by the original Ghostbusters and they'll continue with their banter throughout.

The only real urk about most missions may actually be the banter. It's fine and dandy, but sometimes the Ghostbusters will hold the mission up. If the writing weren't so snappy and clever it might be a pain. You'll find that sometimes you'll achieve the current objective while they're still going on... and you have to listen to it all before you can move on. You can't skip it. At least most missions do go smoothly. They're fairly linear, so there's not much off the beaten path you can do.

Your proton pack is also quite versatile. You'll certainly be blasting a lot of ghosts, but there are other ways you can take down ghosts. You can use Boson Darts or a Shock Blast. There's the Statis Stream which mostly slows down enemy advances. There's also slime tethering. There are moments where the game will make you use most of these things. There are other types of weapons as well.

In spite of all you can do, Ghostbusters is not always an easy game. It's a fairly hard game most times, but at least you hardly feel like it's beating you up. You won't find yourself frustrated, but from time to time you will find yourself challenged. The missions are varied enough and the environments are fantastic looking so you'll find yourself immersed in the game.

If there was any major setback to the game, it would be that there's no local multiplayer for the main campaign. It's a solo job. That isn't to say there's no multiplayer at all. There is, and you can go online with friends and play in several multiplayer arenas. In one instance you are there to trap as many ghosts as you can in the given time. In another you have to survive while trapping ghosts. There's also a multiplayer game where you all have to dunk slimer in the ghost trap as many times as possible. There's even a multiplayer campaign that begs of you to destroy stuff! Most of this stuff is a lot of fun. Still, it's a drag you can't run through the main story with a friend at your side.

Graphically, there's actually quite a difference between the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. The 360 version looks better than the PS3, giving a bit more details in the graphical capacity area. It's not good that the PS3 has to install itself, but the load times don't really feel any different. If you do have both systems, you may be better with the 360, but at least both versions are still quite fun.

When all is said and done, Ghostbusters is a solid title. It fits in well with the canon and has top notch production values. Most important of all, it's fun and easy to get into. Where as most games based off (or spun off) of movies tend to lack a lot of things, Ghostbusters succeeds where so few have succeeded (and many others fail). It's more than just simple fan service. It's an enticing adventure.

I was hoping they would make a Ghostbusters game on today's video games systems! My wish was granted and usually when you want something its never what you want it to be but this game is pretty amazing. The graphics are beautiful, gameplay is very fun. Too bad theirs no multiplayer besides online. And too bad you cant be the real characters in story mode but this game is still great. Ya cant get everything you want I guess but I will take this for sure. The story is pretty decent. The characters are themselves, the real ghostbusters. I am pretty happy with this one. I actually would love them to make another game. If youre a Ghostbusters fan dont hesitate on this one. As a Ghostbusters fan, its one of the best games Ive ever played!

5 out of 5 stars Yes, have some. (PS3 Review)   June 21, 2009

Wow. I had been waiting for this game to come out for years and I can honestly say it is awesome! From top to bottom, this is a well polished presentation that offers Ghostbusters fans an opportunity to join the boys and really bust some heads, in a spiritual sense of course.

For the main story, players are cast in the role of the team's new recruit, pretty much there for the sole purpose of field testing all the new weapons and gadgetry, a job far too dangerous for a real Ghostbuster to be subjected to. You get plenty of opportunity to show your stuff as a soon to open Gozer exhibit unleashes supernatural chaos on the good citizens of New York City. Your character stays silent the entire game which allows you to experience the team's classic banter. Along the way, you will find yourself revisiting familiar locales like the Sedgewick Hotel and the New York Public Library. The firehouse headquarters serves as your hub between calls and you are allowed to explore it at your leisure. Several familiar spooks including Slimer, the Librarian, Stay Puft and the painting of Vigo (which is an absolute blast to interact with) make welcome appearances.

This title is basically a third-person adventure/shooter. The controls are pretty intuitive and equipment upgrades can be purchased to better help you as you progress throughout the game. Enemy A.I. varies on the difficulty setting you are playing on. There are a couple spots that are a bit tough to get through. I'm not a hardcore gamer but I completed the story in about 6 hours, not counting the time spent wandering around the firehouse. The game can also last longer depending on how much you want to explore and take more readings with you PKE Meter. There are many online multiplayer co-op modes that I have not gotten a chance to try but they all sound really cool. You can also assume the roles of the actual Ghostbusters when in multiplayer.

The graphics can be quite stunning and really look the way a next-gen title should. The characters look exactly the way you remember them from the movie aside from Janine, who has again changed her hairstyle. The proton stream and the ghost trapping effects look perfect and the level of detail on the proton pack itself is really cool. The lighting effects are excellent and the location designs are inventive and eerie. The main cutscenes look like they were taken from a CGI film.

The sound of the game is really what cements this title as a true Ghostbusters experience. Bill Murray, Dan Ayroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts are back to handle all your supernatural elimination needs. Alyssa Milano appears as Venkman's new love interest, Brian Doyle-Murray portrays the new mayor of NYC and Bill Atherton is back as the slimy Walter Peck, who is now charged with the duty of helping the city to foot the bill for the damage the Ghostbusters cause. The dialog is well written and will have you laughing out loud.

Most of the sound effects are straight out of the movie including the blaring siren of Ecto-1 (now the Ecto-1B), the proton packs and particle streams, and the various sounds of the spooks, specters and ghosts. Some spots are really creepy like when you traverse through the children's section of the library and your return visit to the Sedgewick. Spiritual voices and moans were coming at me from every speaker in my living room.

One detail of the game I was truly happy with and something I was hoping would be included was the use of Elmer Bernstein's great score from the original film for soundtrack. I believe had he done the score for the second film it would have been a much better movie and would have been better received by audiences and critics. One of the best things about the score being used here is that you get to hear sections of many cuts that were replaced by pop songs and therefore left out of the theatrical version of the film. I own the limited edition score CD that was released a few years ago so I have heard it all before but many people will be hearing these tracks for the first time. There is some original music in the game which blends in nicely for the most part.

I was fortunate enough to be able to pick up this title for both the PS3 and the Wii. Each version offers up a totally different experience. The PS3, 360, and PC versions offer a more authentic movie feel, which can be a little more intense or frightening at times, while the Wii and PS2 versions are more suited for all ages and feel more like a cross between the movies with a little bit of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon thrown in, which is very fitting to the Wii. Much of the content is the same in all versions but the layouts of each level are constructed differently and there may be a snippet of dialog that didn't make it into one version or the other for whatever reason. Additionally, as great as the dialog is, much of it seems better suited to the more cartoonish versions, especially many of Bill Murray's deliveries, which are very funny but at times sound a bit too animated for the realistic next gen versions. I highly recommend trying out both versions of the game if you are able to.

In closing, regardless of what platform you prefer, this game is cause to celebrate for Ghostbusters fans. It was well worth the wait and I will be enjoying both versions for a long time to come. The release of this game, along with the releases of the original film on Blu-ray and the complete series of The Real Ghostbusters on DVD, will hopefully help to re-ignite public excitement with the Ghostbusters franchise and get things rolling with rumors of a possible new movie. Regardless, this game is a Ghostbusters fan's dream come true.
